What is cryolipolysis?

Cryolipolysis, commonly known as fat freezing, is a procedure to eliminate body fat without surgery, which uses cold temperature to reduce fat deposits in certain areas of the body.

The cryolipolysis procedure to eliminate fat with cold is designed to reduce localized fat deposits or bulges that do not respond to diet and exercise. It is not intended for people with obesity.

Cryolipolysis or fat elimination with cold produces a process of fat cell atrophy or apoptosis of fat cells.

The technique has been patented under the name Cool Sculpting.

Which areas of the body are most suitable for cryolipolysis?

Cryolipolysis is effective for reducing localized fat in the chin, upper arms, inner and outer thighs, abdomen, upper back, hips, flanks on both sides of the abdomen (love handles), lower back, and under the buttocks.

How are fat cells reduced?

Cryolipolysis or body fat freezing is based on research that determined fat cells are more susceptible to being affected when exposed to low temperatures compared to other cells, such as skin cells.

The application of a very specific low temperature together with suction of the area for a precisely defined period has an effect on fat cells.

This stimulus triggers an inflammatory response from the body, resulting in the atrophy of fat cells, which will not form fat again in this area.

Macrophages, a type of white blood cell that is part of the body’s immune system, are responsible for eliminating dead fat cells, fat, and other cellular debris.

How is cryolipolysis performed?

The cryolipolysis or cold fat elimination procedure begins with a consultation by our specialist physicians to determine an accurate diagnosis and plan the details.

During the clinical examination, the size and shape of the area where fat is to be eliminated are evaluated and the treatment area is outlined with a marking pencil.

Cryolipolysis with Cool tech is a non-invasive procedure, so patients remain awake.

For the cryolipolysis procedure, a handheld device called an applicator is used, which produces negative pressure or vacuum and subzero cold that fixes and freezes the layer of fat cells (adipocytes) beneath the skin.

First, a gel pad is applied to the area to protect the skin from possible cold burns.

Next, the fat bulge is suctioned or drawn into the applicator opening. The patient will feel a pulling sensation as the suction is applied.

These sensations, the intense cold along with other possible sensations such as tingling, stinging, or burning, decrease after 5 to 10 minutes as the area becomes numb during the cooling process.

The fat layer is gradually cooled to the target temperature between -5 and -3 degrees Celsius.

How much localized fat can be expected to be lost with cryolipolysis?

Studies have shown an average fat reduction of about 28 percent approximately 2 months after the initial treatment.

Cryolipolysis can eliminate localized fat by up to 35% of the volume in the treated area after 4 months.

Multiple sessions can further increase effectiveness to eliminate remaining localized fat.

When will I start to notice results from cryolipolysis?

You may begin to notice changes as soon as 3 weeks after treatment.

The most significant improvement is seen after approximately 2 months.
